- In June of 2002 I fell on a slippery substance. My leg went
completely backwards at the knee. This injury caused a torn acl/pcl and
there was also some artery damage. The surgeon indicated that it was
the worst injury that he had seen to a non athletic person. I had to
have reconstructive knee surgery. No surgery on the damaged artery as
of yet. My surgery took 5 hours. The surgeon used allograph tissue to
repair the damaged ligaments. Today, I am almost 5 months out of
surgery and still having physical therapy 3 times a week. It has been
really hard gaining back my range of motion. I can only bend my leg to
about a 94 degree angle. It is anticipated that I should be able to
gain full range of motion which should be around 120-140 degree angle
according to the therapist. We have reached a point in therapy where I
have not gained a degree in the last 3 weeks. If anyone has any
suggestions for helping me gain more range of motion please let me
know.

- 5 weeks ago I had three tears repaired in the left meniscus
and one tear in the right meniscus. It was discovered that I had no ACL
in my left knee, it having been torn back in a football accident back
in 1968 which occured while I was in college. I wondered after I was
told of this 4 days after surgery why the doctor did not repair this
old injury at the time he was in the knee repairing the three tears. I
am trying to determine if I should have this ACL also repaired or live
with it. That's why I was looking at your site. Do you have a
recommendation? I am 55 and still playing basketball and baseball in

beginning to think that I was the only person to have suffered these
simultaneously! My consultant told me 4 yrs ago that I should just have

shape. My surgeon tells me that my age is not an impediment for this
type of a procedure. He wants to use the the hamstring tendon technique
with the bioabsorbable interference screws.Do you agree that my age is
not an issue and that the technique proposed is the best one available
at this time.Best Regards Eric Lodewijk

miles a day and bike ride. I strapped on a brace recently and have been
playing basketball (returning to the scene of the "crime" so to speak)
but reality is setting in. I don't live in pain, there's no swelling
and I have full range of motion. I am at the point where I don't know
if the cure will be worse that the "disease" (surgery). Site is very
informative and will assist me in making a more educated decision. I
would really appreciate hearing anyone who has had the surgery. Is
anyone out there competing again at 100% capacity afterwards? Does
anyone regret having the surgery or feel they were better-off not
having it? Please advise. Thanks.

- Hello Andreas, As a bowtie afficianado, I can say I enjoyed
your "History of the bowtie" very much. I'd like to try out your
instructions on making them, but the one thing I'm wondering is what
did you use for the liner? Good luck sir, wear your bows proudly.

- Dear Mr. Staehelin: Thank you so much for the information you
have made available concerning ACL Restoration at the following site:
http://www.staehelin.ch/index.html. I have recently been diagnosed with
a complete tear of the ACL and aside from post injury rehab, I am
trying to get educated on surgical options to pursue. Your site has
helped me obtain a much better understanding of the anatomy and
operative techniques available. As a result, I feel much better
prepared to engage doctors on this subject. Thanks so much. David A.

- Hi there, I found your web site by accident and really enjoyed
it. I was looking for a detailed map of Basel but was happy to take a
few minutes to enjoy your love of Harleys, Bow Ties, kids, and

completely. Hope you are getting lots of snow in the Mountains. By the
way, can you tell me the name of the artist that created that large
mechanical water splashing sculpture that is a block or two above
Barfusserplatz? It is the one that looks so interesting in the winter
when the ice covers it and the water flow creates ice designs. Best

anderen Blickrichtung angesehen (seit meinem letzten "Psycho"-Seminar

- Hello, I had patellar tendon acl surgery in July. After
completing 3 months of physical therapy, I was left to my devices to
strengthen quads, etc. by bicycling, hiking, etc. In mid November a
slip and fall caused my knee to flex and my patella broke in three
pieces. Is this a common occurence in post acl surgery patience? Could
I have done anything to have prevented this fropm occurring? Can you
reccommend a rehhabilitation program that will get me back to my active
lifestyle and perhaps spare me, or lessen my chance of, any other
related injuries? Thank You, Stephen Sauve

- Herr Staehelin, I was searching for websites on bow ties and
came across your history page. Very informative and, at times,
humorous. As I browsed your pages, I found that we have at least one
more common interest. I, too have had my ACL reconstructed using the
patellar tendon. Does this make me special? Of course not, but I was
struck by the coincidence. I made my first bow tie using your pictoral
instructions and was very pleased! I do, however have a question that I
have had trouble getting an answer to. However, I do not think that I
used the proper lining. What type of lining do you suggest? Also, do
you use silk or other fabric types? I'm not meaning to take up much of
your time. Just enough to, again, express my enjoyment of your
websites. Sincerely yours, Scott

- Hi there. I've just clicked by your webpage.
I know an Korean archaeologist who always wears bow ties. Bow ties are
very rare in Korea, so I asked why he wears them. He said he prefers
them to regular neck ties because neck ties get in the way and when you
wear a neck tie you run the risk of knocking a historical artifact off
the table and on to the floor. One day, he was given an award by our
university. The president of the university gave him a neck tie with
the school emblem on it. Strangely, the next day, he was wearing a bow
tie with the school emblem on it, so I asked him where he bought it,
forgetting that he had been given a neck tie of the same design the day
before.... He said, quite proudly, that he had taken the neck tie the
president gave him and made it into not one but two bow ties.
- I've already uncut a neck tie that I don't want anymore. I'm
going to try to make it into a bow tie by follow your instructions. I'm
concerned that the neck tie, even when unsewn, won't be wide enough,
but it's worth a try. I'll let you know what happens. In meantime,
thank you for your informative site. Peter Schroepfer, Seoul Korea.

- Bonjour.... I really appreciate you article about the
PCL.....would please give me more details about the tunnels , the
bundles , the position of the insertion of the screws . there is some
contradictions between the text and the schemas.... In the text page3
and according to the figures: the antero lateral bundle(gracilis) is in
the inferior fémoral socket and the second screw (in the tibia)
is screwed in the tibia in position of extention. The other bundle is
in the superior tunnel (semi tendinous) is fixed in flexion near
90° with the third screw... but in the Summary, the semitendinous
is called as anterolateral bundle....and the gracilis as the
posteromedial one.... and finally do use one or two screws in the
tibia...... thanks merci Dr TALHA

- I completely tore my ACL off from one end 2 weeks ago playing
baseball. Since then, I've had telescopic surgery to remove bone
fragments, and a surgery to attempt to re-attach the ligament to the
bone. This was unsuccessful, as the ligament was too far gone and came
apart in the surgeons hand. I am now going to have reconstructive
surgery in about 3 months. Any advice from you people that have
knowledge and/or have been through this would be most welcome. Thanks
alot.

enlightening, it's truly a fun read. I live near Baltimore (Ellicott

across the harbor in a tux? Guess you did...that's the aquarium in the
background. I guess the destruction of the human body must run in the
blood of Ortho surgeons... mine rides steeplechase events at 58... you
ride Harleys. Thanks for the info on your page and the fun I had
reading your bowtie history. I don't usually comment on web pages, but

Dear sir,
I very much enjoyed your history of the necktie.
I am an artist who has been wearing bowties since I was very
young. My
problem is that many of my old ties are very worn and I can no longer
find ties made in the Foulard style— that is very wide. And, being an
artist I really can't afford to purchase some of the beautiful silk
ties
I find in the better men's shops.
My eyes lite up when I saw mention of an article on making your
own
bowtie. I wonder if you would be willing to share this article with me
or let me know where I may further research patterns for making
bowties.
Thanking you in advance for what ever help you may offer.

Dear Mr. Staehelin,
Thanks for your page on bowties. I found a bowtie in a second hand shop
recently, and was curious what it would look like on me. I've recently
become
more interested in dressing less like most people dress these days.
Some
fashions are really tasteless (especially in ties), and seem to be
geared
toward allowing people to "dress down" even when the should be dressing
up,
e.g., in some businesses and public retail settings. I haven't been
able to
figure out how to tie it yet, though, even from the desriptions online,
but
hopefully I will meet someone soon who wears bowties. I think of them
as a
staple of fashions from around the 40s (even though I was born in the
70s, and
never got a sense of those fashions directly), and I think that soon
those
fashions, like the music of that period, will (hopefully) regain
popularity
once again. I can't wait to do my part!
Thanks again for your part.
Sincerely,
Chris Wogaman

It has been a pleasure viewing your site. I had ACL
reconstruction and meniscus repair in February of 1998 in Lausanne. I
took a nasty fall skiing in the Alps. I was doing well in physical
therapy but since coming back to the U.S. after many years in
Switzerland, I have been in "knee denial" since September 98. My
surgeon told me to continue therapy but since moving here and
continuing studies, I have neglected any exercises to improve mobility.
I am currently in a sports medecine course which has opened my eyes to
sports injuries and anatomy and I will be studying rehab and
reconditioning programs for athletes. As I have resolved (New Years
resolution of course), to develop a better program for myself (my knee
first!) I would be interested in some good knee rehab and
reconditioning exercises. My knee is still somewhat sensitive.
Yesterday I tripped on my dog and and a certain rotation gave me great
pain. I should add that I am still loyal to swiss doctors and not yet
american ones even though I am a California girl and I live a kilometer
away from Stanford University. Anyway, thanks for your information
which I quickly devoured and I hope to hear more from you.

Dear Dr. Kruzlifix,
I just finished reading your website and found it very
entertaining, and
even educational. I'm a third year MD/PhD student, originally from
Canada
but studying now in New York City (Mt. Sinai).
I am a proud wearer of bowties and my wife is from a long time
bowtie
family. I've actually had patients thank me for wearing bowties. They
said the appreciated not having a tie fall on them when I examine them.
For our honeymoon (about 3 year ago) my wife and I went to
Switzerland and
found it spectacular. We stayed primarily in Grindawald but traveled.
My wife is very particular about bowties and would only buy the
ones with
the best fabrics and styles (she is classicaly trained as an artist so
her
taste is excellent). After being dissapointed with the available
selections, she started to make them and sell them to some of the
finest
shops in Manhattan. They sold so well that she decided to start her own
website Bowties by Lili.
I'd be honored if you would check out her site. If you like it,
could you put it on your site as a link?
I look forwards to hearing from you,
Zev

noch eine Tuck-tuck-BMW; und anstatt ein Surfbrett wars ein Rollbrett;
entschuldige mich nun höflich für die Fehleinschätzung;
gefreut, dich wiederzusehen. Ciao. Marco

I injured myself last february and I had to wait about 6 monthes
for surgery, becuase I needed to grow.I got my surgery on my acl almost
three monthes ago now. I am running and my orthepedist put me on the
excellerated schedule. By about Christmas time my doctor is assuming
that I will have full strength in my leg and then I can play
competative full contact sports. I am very motivated and excited!

Fabulous site. Corrent concepts and clearly explanations.
I'm a PT who often treats knee problems, including ACL reconstrustions.
Semi-T. seems to me a good technic, but we need a different aproach in
rehab.
Do you now about any protocol for Semi-T like exists for Patelar graf
(Shelbourne - Advanced Rehab.)?
Another question, do exists a special mechanism of lesion in ACL torns
on jumpers (like volleyball players)?
Congratulalions and tanks for any anwsers

Hallo Andreas,
Habe heute Deine PCL Technik gemacht. Sehr schön ! Zwar

Dear Dr. Andreas:
Congratulations for your Web page, is really amazing how you show us
all this information, easy to learn and so clear. Have you experience
with ACL reconstruction using artificial ligament (LARS)?. In my
country, Venezuela, we use it with very good results in young and
active people. Thanks 4 your download programs. We salute you.

Thank you for such an interesting site. My wife was just
diagnosed with a interior cruciate ligament tear. Her right knee has
been a problem for 4 years. I was interested in learning what we were
dealing with now I know more than I wanted.

I had a ACL reconstructed on Nov 9th, 1997. I am getting better
and better. But sometimes, I get pain at the top of the tibia. What do
suggest. Many thanks.

As I can use any language, je vous non parle francais,
perché non lo so.

Sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Staehelin,

Lieber Andreas,
Als heimwehkranker Orthopaede in seinem zweiten Jahr in
Australien, hat
mir Ihre Homepage sehr sehr gut getan.
richtig.
Herzlichst

I tore my ACL playing volleyball about 1 1/2 months ago and am
currently
awaiting reconstruction. My orthopaedic surgeon has only done one
hamstring
graft thus far and wants me to be number two. I was visiting your site
to see the pros and cons to the patellar versus hamstring graft. I
haven't come to any final decision as of yet. My primary concern right
now is I'm 22 and in the military. I am extreemly active so I need
stability. I can handle a longer recovery if it means a stronger knee
in the long run. I don't care about the "all inside" either. My legs
already look like road maps, what's another scar!! I'll write again and
let you know how it all turns out. If you had any further opinions on
the matter I'd love to hear them if possible. Thank you very much for
the information!!!

I am currently enrolled in grade 13 in Ontario Canada and
decided upon the topic of ACL reconstruction for my final project for
my anatomy class. I've found a lot of information about this topic on
the internet, but nothing like what I've found with your download. It
is so amazing and has given me such incredible information that I had
to mail you and let you know how absolutely incredible your site is.
All I keep saying is WOW at every single thing I read or see from your
site and it is much appreciated and respected. Thank you so much. It's
been more help than you could ever imagine!
Keep up the great work!

Cher Andreas,
serviette.
merci encore,
